Service Dogs for Veterans Program

Raven showing of her stuff for Mary
Raven got the Green Light from Mary Cortani of K9 Coach Plus to enter the "Service Dogs for Veterans" program. We need to work on her confidence w/ exposure to lots of new elements & the salt/pepper game. I'm thrilled to be given an opportunity to help a puppy in need & honor our military. While Raven is still technically part of ACGSR rescue she will only be adopted out if she doesn't pass as an official service dog. She will either find a very lucky family or get to devote herself to a hero. This is the same little puppy who was dodging traffic on Highway 101. Fate keep her from becoming discarded road kill. It's become apparent to me that something greater than myself is navigating Ravens path. I've pledged to be her supportive co-pilot in this journey. Please checkout and support  ACGSR Rescue & K9 Coach Plus. Read more about the Service Dogs for Veterans Program .
Good Sit!

Not sure about Salt/ Pepper...we'll work in it.

Meet "RAVEN" 10 week old Lab mix Puppy

Raven made herself at home quickly!

With some of the extra time I had on my hands I was tackling the feral cat issue around our property (..I'll be sure to get on my soap box & rant about that in another post) I took a kitten to the county pound. While I was at the counter waiting my turn, a lady walked in holding a jet black puppy in her arms. She found her running in traffic. Sue, the good Samaritan wanted to check if the pup was microchiped... she wasn't. Trembling with her ears plastered to her head she made a pathetic sight.  Poor lil' pup was terrified of all the chaotic barking. It's an unsettling sound for me, can't imagine what it sounds like to a puppy. Sue said she wasn't leaving the puppy there...nor would I. She said she had a friend who ran a rescue that she would contact. I had a hunch & to confirm it I asked who that friend was? As suspected, it was Viv with ACGSR of Hollister who I'd fostered Jasmine for. I knew Viv was tapped out of foster homes since I'd just turned her down for Oliver a week ago. At the time she asked I still had 2 puppies, but that was no longer the case & this little girl had already captured me. We got Viv on the phone right then & there. She would sponsor & make the necessary appointments & I'd foster. Off we go on another foster adventure!!

Raven keeps an eye on me while I clean up the kitchen
On my way home with this trembling puppy on my lap the reality of what I'd just done was comical. I went to the pound to drop off a cat & came home with a puppy! I promptly called my husband & recanted the whole story to him. He said it was fine & he would've done the same thing...what a gem!!! He asked what her name was? I looked down at the puppy & she looked up at me with her ears perked up like little wings & the sun shining on her black coat..."RAVEN". I gave her a bath as soon as we got home. No obvious fleas & fairly clean. Offered her food. She took a few bites but she was to distracted by Lucy. It was LOVE at 1st sight. They romped around the yard until the bath I'd just given Raven was in question. Viv called & let me know Raven had an appointment With Dr. Wilson in Hollister in a few hours. I got out the camera & started snapping away. I think I know why it's harder to get black dogs adopted...they're difficult to photograph well. So many of the pictures didn't capture how cute she is. It's hard to do her justice in pictures. In this video she is trying to get Lucy to play with her. She likes balls over the other toys. The energy you see in this video is quickly turned off when she is in the house. She sits sweetly while I clean up the kitchen.

Finally, a puppy that will leave Poor Lucy's nipples alone!

Dr. Wilson & Raven

At her appointment she got an exam, vaccinations & worm/flea treatment. Dr. Wilson gave her the green light "HEALTHY PUPPY!" He said she look to be a lab mix but would grow to be on the smaller scale. He also noted the areas around her eyes as  minor Demodex, a skin mite present in most dogs & NOT CAUSE FOR ALARM. When puppies have a compromised immune systems from various reason (like stress, poor diet) they have reactions to the Demodex mites which are present on nearly all dogs. In time with good nutrition & care it should clear up on it's own. He suggested I just keep an eye on it  so that is doesn't get any worse. Raven hasn't seemed bother by it at all.
Raven's coat glistens in the sun
He first night with us went amazingly well. She was very interested in Missy & true to form, Missy avoided her like the plague. Our whole pack settled down to catch up on some DVR episodes of CSI. Raven snuggled in her bed on the floor between us. She would have preferred being on our laps but we don't want to create any bad habits for her new family. She got the hint quickly that the sofa is off limits. At bedtime we crated Raven in the office in a crate next to Lucy. She complained moderately for about 20 minutes then sleep soundly until I woke her up this morning for breakfast.
After play time Raven is ready for snuggles
Love her perky ears!!!

Forever Families - Empy nest

Bailey (Dory) & her Forever Family

One by one Lucy's puppies left our cozy nest & made their way into the homes & hearts of new forever families. Our home is so quiet...to quiet ...must fix that! Cooper & Bailey got an extra week of Lucy TLC. It did a world of good for Baily especially who spent most of the time getting "checked" by her Mama to teach her some better manners. Cooper keep us entertained with his endless charm.

Cooper (Nigel) & his new Mama
Each photo & updates form all the families is like Christmas!!! The BEST reward.
Seeing Bruce sleeping in his Mama's arms, Styx & Adelaide on play dates, Bella at the beach, Bailey with her kitty brothers...all warms my heart. Stories of Mojo sleeping on his back in the kitchen, Noah(Nemo) breathing easier, Cooper sleeping through the night... all make me so proud!

Bella at the beach - There has been some concern regarding this photo. I found out that the wet sand on a beach is one of the safest places to walk a puppy since the tide is constantly eroding the soil (where Parvo lives) . As long as a puppy is carried past dry sand & allowed to only walk in the wet area the exposure is minimal. Interesting!

Forever Families - Phase 1

Adelaide & Styx Meet their Mamas

This weekend has been action packed here on the homestead. Getting puppies & myself prepared for their departure has been all consuming. Baths, paperwork & final farewells have been in the forefront. One of the first comments I get when anyone finds out I'm fostering is "How can you part with them?". The answer is one you either can "get" or not. If you feel the excitement, hope, joy & love in the eyes & smiles of the adoptive families then you "get it". If not trying to describe it is hopeless. The most impactfull moment was when Styx(Squirt) & Adelaide(Peach)'s new Mamas met them. Neither of them had ever personally met the puppies. They  greeted their puppies with a symphony of "Oohs & Aahs" Seeing their reaction to their new family members was priceless. Adelaide's Mama was so excited she could hardly keep her hand from shaking to write the donation check.

Bruce & His Forever Family

The most appropriate word to describe Bruce's family "ADORABLE!" Each family member is equally enthusiast, informed & devoted. They're the picture perfect post card of the stereotypical "all American Family" complete with a yellow dog. They should pose for Hallmark!

MoJo & his Mama
It's my prediction MoJo(Crush) is going to be the most spoiled pup of the litter. His new Mama looks at him with deep love smitten gazes & melts into baby talk just to see his chubby tail wag. MoJo's family has waited a long time for the right match for their family. They had an approved application in place & were patient in their search. It's obvious their patience paid off. From the get-go MoJo was by far the most cuddly, mellow Snuggle bug of the litter. He was born to be their "baby".
MoJo & his Forever Family

Bella & her Forever Family
Bella(Pearl)'s adoption was the most in question. I wasn't sure if her family was going to bite or not. While her new PaPaw is ready for a new pup, her Mama had some hesitation. Bella worked her magic & charmed them into taking the bait. Bella is a bright puppy & loves attention just like the others but she is the one who likes to sick close to me when the others would rather be off exploring. I'm sure Bella will give her lifetime of devotion & appreciation to the chance she's been given. I highly doubt there will be any regrets for giving this sweetie a family.

Grandma's Nermo & his new Mama
Nemo is with our son's girlfriend to get some extra TLC while he recovers. I'll be crate training Bailey(Dory) & Cooper(Nigel) this next week. It's become evident that Nemo will only be returning for visits to Grandma's & not as a permanet resident. He's a proven thief & has stolen her heart. There is nothing better than giving a puppy you love to someone you love. Win-Win situation for us all. Seeing her so happy makes missing Nemo tolerable. Nemo has a big brother, our son's Siberian Husky, Coach. They're so cute together! Coach is still a little confused & I think a bit jealous of this new little dude taking over. Nemo stands up for himself & acts like a little macho man... & then tries to snuggle up next to Coach like a little baby. Everything is going great so far, he seems very happy.

8 Down, 1 to Go

Bailey (formerly Dory) & her new Pa'Paw
So much has happened since my last post. Most notably ALL PUPPIES ARE SPOKEN FOR. We even have a cancellation list as backups in case there are any "cold feet". Lucy on the other hand has had ZERO interest! Once the puppy shine wears off so many dogs are easily looked over. Lucy's only flaw is living past puppyhood.

It's been both fun & rewarding meeting all the new "Forever Families". My faith in humanity has been reaffirmed. It's reassuring to know  there are genuinely good people out there. The future of mankind  looks promising as well. The children of all the families are all  surprisingly bright & kind. I think I've had a few to many bad trips to Walmart on Saturday afternoons confronted by screaming out of control brats. It's refreshing to see the love in the eyes of the children, both for the puppies and for their families.Crush, was the 1st to be claimed. his family has been approved by Rescue since March & only now have they found a puppy that spoke to them like Crush. No surprise since Crush speaks to everyone! Crush now has 3 kids & another dog to play with. Bruce, was 2nd to be claimed. His family is so excited! They've done their homework & are ready for a new addition. He will be the children's 1st dog.  One of the contractors doing work on our yard renovation will be sad to see Bruce go. He took an extra special liking to him since they share the same name. Bruce's new collar is a favorite chew tow for his litter mates. It's a good lesson in tolerance for Bruce & one less thing for him to have to get used to in his new home Bailey (formerly Dory) , will be an addition to a young energetic couple with cats. I'm not worried about the cats, they'll put Bailey in her place. As long as they keep Bailey tired & trained this marriage looks promising. Cooper(formerly Nigel), Is our most memorable puppy. The vets office asks mostly about him most...& Nemo is the sick one. Sunday our whole family was over & Cooper was the biggest conversation piece. Everyone tries to figure him out..we're still trying! His family has also done their homework & are fellow Cesar Milan followers. With Cesar in their corner they'll do great. The way they handle their precious two year old is an indication of their devotion & patience. Squirt 's adoption was of the most relief. He is such a cute & sweet puppy but has a look that isn't traditionally puppy cute. He is the favorite amongst all of the contractors doing work to our yard. Squirt is 1st at the gate to greet them in the mornings & 1st to run off with their coffee cups. He is always on a mission to find a new toy! His new mama is an Sea Lion trainer & already has a supply of toys for her new baby. Bella (formerly Pearl) is headed for her throne. She will be a princess in her new family. Her new parents are retired empty nesters  looking for someone to spoil. She turned on her charm & won their hearts. Peach is the last puppy to be adopted. So many applications had her listed as one of the puppies they were interested in but she keep getting over looked. Her prospective adoptive mama will be here later today to see if Peach is "the one". I may be jumping the gun, but I have a good feeling about it. She, like Squirts mama is an animal trainer who has a Boxer & is looking for a play mate for him. Of all the puppies Peach is the one who is most attached to Lucy. She is the one who loves to nibble one her ears & chew on her tail. A home with another dog would be so nice for her. My fingers are crossed. if by chance that doesn't work out we have a list of approved applicants ready to give her a home. Nice to have a plan B. Nemo selected his family -  OURS!!! . After Sunday the spell was cast on us all. Nemo will be getting lots of attention & furry friends. His new fur brother Coach, a 1 year old Siberian Husky is eager to welcome him to the pack.

Now my new mission is getting Lucy a family of her own.

Emergency Vet Visit for Nemo

Nemo perking up around Midnight 10/8/10
I'd like to stat of by making it very clear that as of this moment Nemo is doing GREAT!!! Most of the photos in this post were taken moments ago while he naps at my feet.

After the visit to see Dr. Stubchar on Thursday the puppies were all doing good. Friday morning while feeding breakfast I notice Nemo kinda hanging back & not in his usual robust mood. I made note of it, hoping it was in reaction to the vaccinations the day before. At lunch there was no mistaking something was dreadfully wrong. He was standing in a corner struggling to breath. My heart raced & I flew into crisis mode. I swooped him up & went directly to Dr. Stubchar's office. Luckily I was able to see her right away. She & her office staff ( nor I) could believe this was the same pup they'd seen just 24 hours prior. Our biggest fear was dreaded Parvo, but the test came out Negative -Fantastic news! We then knew what is wasn't, now the delima was figuring out what it was.

X-ray showed a mass in Nemo's diaphragm/lung area. What was it? An Ultrasound would mean taking this already struggling pup to San Jose, 40 minutes away & try to be seen. We didn't think that was time he had to spare. The decision was made to take a peek inside, see what was going on? If there was a hernia in his diaphragm is could be addressed right away. The surgery revealed no hernia. More good news! There was fluid in his lungs so pneumonia was toss out as a possibility since he was running a slight fever.

The day prior Nemo had the foresight to poop during his exam. Dr. Stubchar had the foresight to run a fecal analysis. The results were concerning. It displayed a high parasite count of round wroms. The whole litter had been de-wormed on Oct.3rd , the Sunday prior, The worming was noticeably effective by the appearance of bean sprout looking worms in their poop Monday morning. Nasty, but a common occurrence especially in stray dogs. After the initial deworming we figured whatever was living in their little bellies had been addressed & they were in the clear until the next deworming 10 days latter (per instructions) .....not so!!! The infestation was so severe that the worming wasn't able to address it all. Nemo's issue was either caused or compounded by the round worms migrating to his lungs.

During surgery his insides were thoroughly inspected & there were no other findings. He was stitched up & dewormed again. He is now on anti-inflammatory & antibiotics. I brought him home with an IV catheter still in place. I stayed up with him all night to keep a close watch.( not how I'd envisioned spending my    birthday) He was a groggy, whimpering noodle & still struggling to breathe. Note: in the  photos his eyes look goopy from the lubricant used during surgery.

Around mid-night he began to perk up a bit but still no tail wags or appetite. He had to eat small meals regularly to get some nutrition in him to gain some strength to allow his body to recover. About 1:00 am I resorted to smearing honey in his mouth. He was able to have a bowel movement & pass a pile of worms, 1st time I was happy to see a puppy poop in my living room.  Bleach spray came out & I went into sterilization mode. I'm already freaked out at he whole worm notion. We've see a few to many Discovery programs. I'm going to my family Dr. Monday just to put my mind at ease. I'm a pretty clean person & keep a fairly clean house. During the whelping process & the 1st month of the puppies lives they spent it here in my home office. I am on constant poop patrol & diligent with disinfectants but you just can't be to sure.

Heinsight is 20/20. I should have dewormed Lucy as soon as she came to our house. This is a sever lesson learned. Worms are something I never had to address. We'd have our dogs heart worm tested & keep them on monthly prevention so it was never in the for front of our minds. It  is now! Live & Learn.

Saturday Morning Nemo went back to Dr. Stubchar's office because he wasn't eating or drinking & needed fluids. He spent the day there. That worked out perfectly. Saturday was our 1st puppy meet & greet with 3 adoptive families. Knowing Nemo was in good hands let me focus on the rest of the litter for a while. When I pick him up he had already eaten 1/2 a jar of baby food & his eyes were clearer. Last night he really began to perk up. He went out with me to feed the litter both lunch & dinner. He didn't eat but hung out on the sidelines. We had friends come over last night whit their 2 sons 6 &8 years old. Nemo had lots of fun playing with them. He has to stay separate form the litter & supervised when he is with them so they don't open his incision & he has a chance to heal. This is an added bonus for his adoptive family. Nemo is already started on crate training, potty training & getting used to living in a home. There is no way I could do this with all the puppies ...& stay married.

Neno's future prognosis looks good. He was the biggest, most advanced in the litter which gave him a leg up. We need to keep him under close watch until his breathing return to normal. While it's much better, his breathing is still not 100%. He is on Anti-Inflammatory & Antibiotics for 14 days. Aside from his scar there is not reason to believe he will not make a full recovery. He has started eating small meals mixed with yogurt. Antibiotics tend to kill all bacteria even the good stuff that stabilizes yeast. the yogurt contains probiotics that help counter.  Now the question is : After investing this much time & emotion into Nemo will I be able to part with him? Only to an extra special family.

Crate training isn't fun for Nemo or Foster Mama

Vet Visit - 1st vaccinations

Janette, Nemo & Dr. Stubchare
Rounding up all 8 curious pups was an interesting event. Thankfully the staff at Princevalle Pet Hospital in Gilroy was kind enough to move the crate from the truck to the office & back to the truck again. All I had to do was hold the door. This was my first visit with Dr. Stubchare and most certainly not my last. Her clear informative manner makes receiving  information easy to grasp and communication seamless. The staff was so friendly and gushing over the litter.(can't blame them, who can resist?) I think Misty has a crush on Pearl.... but Pearl took a fancy to Janette. Nemo & Nigel worked their magic on Dr. Stubchare. Such flirts those two boys are!! I'm happy to report the pups are in good health. Kudos to all for no dramatics. Not one single cry baby! They all took their shoot like big dogs.
Crush with Dr. Stubchar & Janette
The only minor issue that came up was of no great alarm. Nigel & Pearl have VERY SMALL umbilical hernias that are VERY common & NOT a cause for alarm. NOTHING needs to be done until spay/neuter. At that time they will need 2 or 3 small sutures. Again, NOT A BIG DEAL.The vet assured me this is not something that will cause any predisposed medical issue. It just simply happens to dogs, cats, babies & adults.  She showed me what it looks like & it's kinda like they have a little "outie" belly button. Other than that they're in GREAT health!!!
Yikes! where are you putting that???????
More good news- All boys testicles have dropped so no worry of retained testicles!!!!
